Here’s an eye-opening statistic: in 2015, the number of searches on mobile devices surpassed searches on the desktop.
Did you get that statistic? Oh, it’s really important that you do.
Again, there are now more searches performed on mobile devices than there are on desktop computers.
Okay, cool. Nice statistic, right?
But, what does that have to do with you?
Well, it’s simple, really. If your website isn’t mobile friendly, you’d better make it so. Now.
The fact of the matter is, customers, fans and clients are doing pretty much everything on their mobile phones. And, if they’re not on their phones, they are on their laptops or tablets. In all cases, they are accessing sites from their mobile devices.
So, what should you do?
You must make your website responsive.
The good news is, today, you have lots of options. It’s a matter of picking the right type website design or theme.
But, let me back up for a moment. That fancy term, responsive, simply means that your website or theme will allow your site to respond, in size, to whatever device you are accessing it from.
So, for example, if you’re on a mobile phone, the site will automatically resize itself to fit your phone. If you pick up a tablet and access your site, it will respond automatically. This very site that you’re on right now is responsive (see photo above). And, that’s what you want.
The first order of business is selecting the right platform. By platform I mean the system your site will site on top of. WordPress and Squarespace are two popular examples.
With WordPress, you make your site responsive by simply installing a responsive theme. The good news is, many themes are free or inexpensive.
With Squarespace, they’ve already done the heavy lifting for you. Their sites come out of the box responsive.
In some cases, you may have to do a little tweaking. For example, if your desktop site setting in your WordPress theme is set at left and right margins of, say, 50 pixels, it may not look well on a mobile phone. Therefore, you might need to set the margins at zero.
Most themes make such tweaking easy. Some even allow you to see your changes in real time on different devices. Now, that’s really cool.
The point is, make your site responsive now and see how differently your audience responds.
As a personal brand, offering your audience consistently good experiences is a must. Having a responsive website is one of those experiences.
